Choosing a domain name for the site
One of the first stages of site creation is the step of choosing a domain name selection. Choosing a domain name for the site is important, because the name of the site will not depend on the success of the site. How do I choose a domain name?
The question of how to name the site, the site owners are asked in the first stages of development. This is not surprising, since the chosen domain name for the site and its overall concept have a great mutual influence on each other.
Choosing a domain name for a site is made according to several important criteria, including the length of the name, its relevance to the subject matter of the site, as well as its memorability for users.
Site domain length is an important criterion for choosing a site. Previously, almost all webmasters tried to choose as short domain names as possible for their sites, as it is much easier to remember and enter them in the browser’s address bar. However, to date, free domain names of little length are almost gone, and, moreover, nowadays, users rarely enter site addresses into the browser’s address bar manually. In this regard, the length of the domain name of the site, although it remains important, but still not so priority.
Website domain relevancy is the criterion for matching the chosen domain name to a site theme. Traditionally, it is customary to use 2 approaches to choosing a domain name by this criterion: the owners either name their sites by the name of the company or organization the site represents, or use thematic keywords for the name. Both approaches have their advantages and disadvantages.
For example, choosing a domain name for a site according to the name of the owner company is only necessary when the company name is already well known to the target audience of the site brand. If the company is young, but its name is unknown to anyone, then choosing a domain name according to that name is not recommended. In this case, the domain name of the site will not be able to tell Internet users about what the company owns the site, and therefore a stable association between the site name and the activity of the company will not arise.
When choosing a domain name for a site, you should not forget that, in terms of search engine promotion, using a domain name for keywords increases the relevance of the site to those keywords in search engine ranking. Therefore, if you use popular keywords in the domain name of the site that are relevant to the theme of the site, then the site only benefits from it.
Remembering the domain name of the site is also an important criterion for choosing it. The better the site’s domain name is remembered, the more effective the promotion of the site will be with the various promotional activities mentioning that name. It should be noted that it is better not to use such words in the domain name, the spelling of which may be ambiguous, otherwise users will often be mistaken when trying to enter the URL of the site in the address bar of the browser.
Today, all domain names of sites are accepted to be divided into 2 conditional groups, depending on in which domain zone they are registered. These are regional and international domain names. Regional domain names indicate that the site belongs to a certain region, they are registered in such domain zones as, for example, .ua, .ru, etc.
International domain names are not “linked” to a specific region, so they are suitable for the sites of companies operating in several countries. Examples of domain names in this group include .com, .net, .biz.
It is worth noting that the rules for registering domain names in some domain zones may have their own peculiarities. For example, you can only register a domain name in the .ua area under the name of a registered trademark. In this case, transliteration rules for domain names, approved in accordance with the Appendix to the decision # 9 of the Ukrainian Legal Terminology Commission, protocol No. 2 of April 19, 1996, shall be used to record the Latin brand name.
According to the domain name registration rules, a domain name cannot begin or end with a character other than the Latin alphabet or number. In addition to Latin letters and numbers, the domain name can also use a hyphen. However, relatively recently, it has become possible to register Cyrillic domain names for sites, and therefore, in domain names in addition to Latin, numerals and hyphens, you can now use Cyrillic letters.
Choosing a domain name for a site is a difficult task that requires a serious, thoughtful approach. And best of all, entrust the solution to this task to professionals who have enough experience and knowledge to choose a really effective domain name.
