Do I need a mobile version of a small business site?

Interest in the mobile segment of the Internet audience today is as high as ever: the number of users accessing sites from mobile devices is constantly growing and search engines are actively calling for optimization of sites for mobile audiences. In this situation, the owners of large companies have long been in a hurry to get mobile versions of their sites, but it is completely different with small business representatives. Do I need a mobile version of a small business site?

Small businesses tend to create business sites with a minimum of features to ensure that they have an online presence on the one hand, and on the other hand to fit within a rather modest budget that can be allocated to development. As a result, the mobile version of the site is often considered an optional and, importantly, expensive application.

At first glance, this approach is quite logical: if the company website only presents text about its services or products, a couple of photos and contact details, it would be too wasteful to spend extra money to develop a mobile version. But there is a downside to the coin:

A site that is not mobile-friendly may look different on the screen of different gadgets than they intended.
if sub-menu items of the site’s multilevel menu are opened only when the mouse is hovering, then this menu will not work on mobile devices;
if a site is made using Flash technology, it may not display correctly or not work at all if it is, for example, Apple mobile devices that are not supported by Flash.
As a result, optimizing your site for mobile browsing is important and cannot be ignored, regardless of the size of the business and its financial capabilities. Therefore, even a small business needs to make sure that the site remains as attractive, user-friendly and functional to mobile users as it is to PC users.

Fortunately, this can be done in different ways, and if a company, for example, is unable to develop and maintain a separate mobile version of the site, you can always resort to a special adaptive layout. In this case, the site is immediately created to automatically adapt to any users and represent the company in the best way.

The easiest way to make a small company website with responsive web design is to use a rubber tip and a special set of rules that determine the size and relative position of the design elements on each page of the site. However, this approach will work only if the functionality of the site for PC users and mobile users is the same.

Most often, responsive web design uses Media Queries queries, but Javascript, PHP is also possible. At the same time, you can find a lot of special online tools that help webmasters to some extent automate the creation of responsive web design, as well as check the results. For example, a fresh tool from Google called Resizer, an open source project for automatically generating Responsive Image Breakpoints Generator, has gained popularity.
